Returning, after the Christmas shutdown, was Michelle & Tim Gerber (OH) as our Assistant and Head Cooks, Doug Goertzen (IL) as Crew Leader and Don & Rachel Horst as Project Director and Office Manager (KS).  In addition, Clayton Reesor (ON) and David King (VA) joined us as Crew Leaders.

Sunday evening 14 young weekly volunteers arrived from VA bringing our volunteer total to 21.

Monday morning started with a scrumptious breakfast that included fresh eggs donated by Brad & Gail Carter from Dalton, OH.  In spite of the brisk weather, the tin roof on Elsie’s house was successfully removed, sheeting, Ice and Water shield installed, as well as repairs done on the bathroom floor and ceilings.  By Thurs. Elsie’s roof and interior work were completed, tin roof on Fernando’s house replaced, new sheeting, Ice and Water shield and shingles installed.  Friday’s sunny weather was perfect for getting a deck built, ramp attached, new wheelchair accessible front door installed and a fresh coat of paint on the entire outside of Fernando’s house.

Earlier in the week, with tears running down his cheeks and a heavenward gaze, Fernando’s brother told us, “I know Mamma is smiling, I know she is looking down smiling.  Mamma, someone is going to put a new roof on our house!”  When we finished our work, a neighbor confirmed, “Yes, their dear mother would be smiling, knowing someone helped her sons in this way.”  What a difference a new roof can make!  Being able to replace some bad siding and paint the whole house made a big difference too.

Periodically while volunteers were on the roof, Don would show Fernando, who is wheelchair bound, pictures of the team working.  His response was, “Wow”.  It meant a lot to him to see why they were making so much noise.  After the wider front door, deck and ramp were in place, Don asked Fernando if he would like to see firsthand what they have done.  Fernando agreed, so Don wheeled him out the front door and down the newly installed ramp.  It was fun to see his face light up when he saw the changes with his own eyes.

Next week we anticipate doing drywall taping at Deshotel’s and possibly replace the roof on Wither’s house.
