It’s back to school” time. After retiring as finance manager for Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) several months ago, Glenn Hillard is thinking about going back to school”—to MDS leadership training, that is!

My wife and I are planning to attend one of the leadership trainings in the near future to hopefully be able to see where we might fit into the MDS volunteer picture,” he said.

Although he has enjoyed traveling and gathering with family and friends since he retired, he acknowledged he misses the people he worked with. The staff and volunteers were made up of many interesting individuals with varied talents and gifts,” he said. There were many challenges that presented themselves as we dealt with getting folks back into their homes after disasters and the solutions tended to be varied and sometimes creative.”

Working with a team was always enjoyable—and now Hillard is thinking about ways to be part of a volunteer team. We are currently thinking of something where we can utilize our RV, whether that be an RV project specifically or perhaps driving for one of the Amish groups,” he said. I’ve also given some thought to helping move equipment around from site to site or to and from warehouse locations.”

He’s still not sure where he’ll end up volunteering but so far, the post-retirement journey has been enjoyable. I’m not sure just yet where I might fit in—but I’m looking forward to figuring that out,” he said.
