Stoney Creek Bridge – Hendersonville, NC
All of the weekly volunteers left on Friday and Saturday, with the exception of 1, who left on Monday morning. We had 1 new weekly volunteer arrive on Sunday evening to work the 2nd week of the project. He lives in Raleigh, NC and is a retired engineer, that worked on bridges in NC so was a great asset to the team! We also had one daily volunteer work on Tuesday.
Our leadership volunteers, the weekly volunteer, and one daily volunteer worked on the final touches this week. On Monday they worked on concrete, rip-rap, and curbing. Tuesday was spent finishing the bridge approaches, posts and reflectors, and seeding and mulching the surrounding areas around the bridge. On Wednesday they finished grading and cleaned up.
On Thursday the excavator and equipment were transported to Ashe County where DAO will be constructing the next bridge.
Friday was celebration day to dedicate the Stoney Creek Bridge, and it was a beautiful day. We had approximately 50 people attend, including officials from the State of NC, Henderson County, FEMA, and NC VOAD. Also attending was David Kanagy, Regional Operations Coordinator and Ray Sipe, Disaster Response Coordinator Lutheran Disaster Response Carolinas, who gave the bridge blessing and prayer.
Two of the homeowners were asked to speak and cut the ribbon. We followed with a light lunch.
