San Juan, PR – Feb. 9-15, 2025
This week was a transition week for everyone at the project as we moved from Arecibo back to the Techos headquarters in San Juan, and an OM transition midweek.
The volunteers this week were from Canada, USA, and Germany. (If I make the a broad sweep I won’t miss anyone!) It seemed like a come and go week with some people attending the MDS 75th celebration and other conference obligations and new OM coming. In the end everything worked out! What’s MDS without some interesting twists and turns! (Oh, did I mention the new OM was also cooking Friday and Monday, no big deal!)
Let’s move on to the stuff you really want to know about.
The crew this week demolished the existing roof at Jesus’s home and started rebuilding it new. This all sounds simple as it’s just dismantle and put back! but oh the amount of work to cut all the wood to build the rafters, all the little pieces (like lego) that in the end fit together to be a strong hurricane withstanding form of art! Yup, that’s all they did! GREAT job to everyone that worked through sunshine and rain, pretty well every day (for short periods). The homeowner rents a home next door while they’re waiting for their new roof and the interaction between volunteers and client was very special. It’s heart warming to say the least!
As always, there was friendly banter around the meal times which everyone enjoyed thanks to Pauline’s hard work in the kitchen!
Thanks to everyone for making this week another successful and safe week for MDS!
Until next time,
OM for All
