Point Au Chien, LA – Mar. 8-14, 2026

An ambitious team of Volunteers from the Lancaster region in Pennsylvania  made up of 4 young ladies and 5 young men along with their 2 sponsors made a huge impact on the Pointe au Chien community this week!  With their help, our team of 6 LT volunteers were able to accomplish a good deal of hard work, sprinkled with some great experiences for the volunteer team. 

Because the previous week’s team had moved all 4 homes to a dried-in status, the team this week was able to focus primarily on working within the interior of 3 of the homes.  As expected, the work involved hanging drywall , mudding in a cumber of the homes.  At one home, the railings were added to complete the work on the stairs. 

As an alternative to drywall, free plywood has also been utilized in building walls in all of the 4 homes. This technique was unique to many volunteers as they applied bondo to the seams between sheets, sanding to a smooth surface.  In one home, the walls and ceilings were primed which are ready for next week’s team to paint. 

This week’s team was very fortunate to be able to utilize the expert cabinet-making skills of our sponsor couple who made the 6 beautiful vanities needed for all 4 homes.  

During the week, there was also time for fun as one volunteer team built a boat out of wood pieces and sailed on the bayou to a 2nd home we were working on downstream.  Local fisherman stopped on their way back from the sea to check out the boat and generously shared some crab they had caught.  See the pictures of the melee the full team had in “cracking open” and enjoying the tasty bits of crab the Cooks had bravely prepared.  The whole team also enjoyed a dolphin cruise by a local where they saw 9 porpoises jumping together which is rare.  During the week, the LT volunteers were also treated to some wonderful piano and accordion music provided by the visiting volunteers.  We have found that each week brings new blessings to the residents and the team working her.
