We started the week with 8 volunteers from Ohio.  5 men and 3 women came with happy spirits and a willingness to do whatever was needed.

The weather was chilly, cloudy and there was a lot of strong wind adding to the chill factor.  The wind was strong enough to uproot 2 large trees near our job sites.  Once in a while we did see the sun and that brightened everyone’s day

We finished the flooring in the new build on Tyler St and did lots of trim painting.  Insulation was blown into the attic, and the kitchen cabinets were installed with hardware.  We put a new floor in the entrance of the Tyler St church.  The block layers came on to do the foundation walls at the end of the week and the cement was mixed and the joints were struck by our team.  Lots of sand was shoveled at both locations during the week.  A ramp was completed and the front door changed for a resident that was unable to get into his home due to a resent disability.  In another house we removed an inside chimney, carrying the brick down 2 flights of stairs in 5-gallon buckets.  Cold and tired, each volunteer was rewarded with the knowledge they were each making a difference.

In the evening our cooks had a delicious hot homemade meal for us to dine on.  We had homemade baked goods, lots of good coffee and sometimes pie and ice cream.  We were treated by one of the homeowners with a Smith Island cake that everyone enjoyed.

The evenings were full of exciting games like Rook and Happy Salmon plus other crazy games.  We also worked on an ice cream puzzle that took all week to get together.

All in all, the week flew by and a lot of work was done to help these people.  Thanks to MDS for giving each of us the opportunity to serve in this way.

Sincerely,

Crisfield MD Team
