Black Mountain/ Hendersonville, NC – Nov. 1-7, 2025 (NC Bridges)
We had a total of 4 volunteers during this week 11/3-11/7, 1 Weekly, and 3 Leadership volunteers, to work on the Summey, Kaufmann, and Beg Bridges in Black Mountain, and the Albright and Gongage Bridges in Hendersonville. Our volunteers were from MN, PA, and OH.
Our volunteers worked on 5 bridges this week. Progress was as follows:
Summey: This bridge is completed. All that needed to be done this week was the grading of the driveway stone. That was done on Tuesday.
Kaufmann: Volunteers poured the 6” concrete wall, finished installing the deck and guide rails on Monday. Tuesday, they installed the gabion baskets, stone on the driveway, 4 marker posts and reflectors, and the weight limit sign. Wednesday, they began grading the driveway and bridge approaches and filling the gabion baskets. Thursday, they continued grading the stone bridge approaches and filling the gabion baskets. On Friday they finished grading the stone driveway. This bridge is also completed.
Beg: Monday, the volunteers poured the 6” concrete back wall. Tuesday, they installed the deck and removed the concrete forms on back wall. Wednesday, they finished installing the deck boards. Thursday, the volunteers installed the guide rails and the rock gabions. On Friday they installed the gabions, stone driveway, and cleaned up.
Albright: On Friday the volunteers began work on the Albright bridge. They laid out the new bridge footings.
Gongage: Work on the Gongage bridge began on Tuesday as the volunteers unloaded and laid out rebar dowels, and set up. Wednesday, they drilled holes for rebar dowels and bent and cut it. On Thursday they continued to drill and clean out holes, epoxy rebar for footing additions to existing bridge abutment. Friday, they built the forms for concrete work.
