MDS prepares for massive winter storm ⚠
As the upcoming winter storm threatens to affect more than 230 million people in the United States, Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) is preparing by monitoring the storm’s expected path, ensuring volunteers are safe, and praying for all who might endure damage and hardship in the coming days.
Volunteers headed to western North Carolina to build driveway bridges and homes have postponed their MDS service until conditions are safe. Volunteers in Spartanburg, South Carolina delayed their travels so that they will not be moving on or off the MDS site during the storm.
The winter storm has the potential to bring damaging ice in the southern U.S., along with heavy snow from Texas to the northeast. People could be impacted by long-lasting power outages and tree damage. Either heavy snow or ice is forecast for 33 states from the storm.
Winter storm alerts have been issued by the National Weather Service from the southern Rockies to the East Coast, covering dozens of major cities including Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.
MDS U.S. Executive Director Kevin King emphasized the importance of preparedness and community care. “Practicing disaster preparedness helps ensure we can respond safely and effectively,” he said. “We encourage people to check on neighbors, churches, and loved ones, and we join in prayer for all who may experience hardship. MDS will continue monitoring the situation and responding as needs emerge.”
