Spring break for nine Eastern Mennonite University students involved a trip to Puerto Rico where they learned how to put on a roof damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017. They were joined by the campus pastor at EMU.

Introductions during orientation had a consistent theme: no one knew much about putting on a roof and everyone was interested in learning new skills and ready to be helpful with whatever was needed.

The group worked on two houses. Monday began with demolition and cleanup. The days following included inside work reinforcing walls, setting beams, and cutting door openings. Trusses were built and set. Soffit, blocking, and plywood were installed.

On Friday the homeowner who finally had a tin roof was presented with a Bible and blessing from the volunteers.

On Wednesday evening, Amarilis González, executive director of Techos Pa’ Mi Gente gave us an overview of the work of TPMG and responded to questions from our volunteers.

Two crew leaders ended their assignment this week. Gregg Olson returned to his home in Minnesota and Jerry Engle to his home in Pennsylvania. The EMU volunteers affirmed their ability to train and be patient with unskilled workers.

On Saturday two new crew leaders arrived. Duane “Big D” Cookson lives in Winchester VA and Dennis Weaver in Newmanstown PA. Both will remain until the project closes March 28. They join our cook Em Yoder, project director Rex Graham, and office manager/assistant cook, Don Yoder.

Next week our volunteers will come from Alberta and Manitoba Canada, Pennsylvania and Iowa. The work of replacing roofs will continue.
