Crisfield, MD – Jan. 26-Feb. 1, 2025
Sunday evening our new group of 11 volunteers arrived, nine girls from New York and two from PA. We also welcomed Maynard and Mary, from close by in Maryland, and they will be helping out as crew leader and assistant cook this week.
We are looking forward to a much warmer week to continue our work here. On Monday the volunteers went to work at two job sites side by side. They began to shingle the new build and by the end of the day that was completed except for the ridge cap. Next door the volunteers began a new job on the Enon Baptist Church. Their church suffered roof damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2013 and has basically been patched but leaking ever since! The volunteers went right to work scaling the roof and removing old shingles. Most of these girls are very happy to be on the roofs and have no qualms about the heights!
The group of volunteers who had worked on the new build yesterday went to Ms. Denise’s on Tuesday and began the work of removing old shingles, cut out bad areas on the roof and repaired those areas. On Wednesday they put on the ice and water shield and the new shingles and finished the back fascia. By Thursday that roof work was completed.
Every day the rest of the week a crew of volunteers worked on the church roof, removing old shingles, repairing various areas, putting on the ice and water shield and sheathing, and finally putting new shingles on the roof. By Thursday evening, the church had a new roof before the rain began that evening! A great shout arose from the rooftop when they completed the project!!
On Thursday evening three members of the Enon Baptist Church joined us for our evening meal. We enjoyed listening to their stories of the history of the church and the many ways they’ve seen God at work. They said many in the community have driven slowly by the church this week and were amazed to see all those girls working on that church roof!!
Our volunteers worked so hard this week and still had energy left to go play volleyball on the beach even when we thought it was far too cold for volleyball!
We are grateful to Maynard and Mary for their leadership and help this week. On Saturday we will welcome our new crew leader and assistant cook.
