Lahaina, HI – Nov. 16-21, 2025
This week in Lahaina, volunteers continued steady progress on several fire recovery projects. House 3, a new build, is moving forward, while updates are pending for House 4 as the team works with Brandy to confirm homeowner names and signatures. House 5 also requires homeowner signatures, which will be gathered using the ADU agreement established with the church prior to MDS arrival. At House 6, volunteers focused on framing and molding. House 7 is awaiting a job card; the house was partially built up to the walls before volunteers arrived. The team plans to install windows and siding. This auxiliary dwelling unit was added to the list after the homeowners were forced to release a faulty contractor who had scammed them.
DR reported that the October crew primarily worked on volunteer accommodations and began initial construction work, while November volunteers have framed a number of houses, stood walls, and installed windows with coverings while they await roofing materials. A shortage of builders and truss availability on the island has slowed progress. In response, MDS volunteers will be building trusses themselves. Andy McKee brings previous truss-building experience, and homeowners have approved the plan. A request has been sent to the structural engineer, who is working with Don Lichti and Eric to finalize the next steps. House 2 served as the first trial truss build, and House 1 may also receive volunteer-built trusses. Completing this step may allow plumbers to work during the December break so January volunteers can continue with the next phase of construction.
DR and BD shared that relationships within the local community continue to grow, and volunteer efficiency is strengthening as trust develops. The biweekly dinner with community guests has been encouraged to continue, and cultural training sessions have been well received by volunteers. Arrivals and departures are going smoothly, and volunteers appreciate having independent weekend time.
Accommodations are functioning well, and BD will send photos of the setup to MW. The site has the tools and equipment needed, and weekly vehicle maintenance is ongoing. DR was able to borrow additional resources, including compressors, generators, and hard hats, from the Tool Bank, which will be returned prior to the winter break.
