Lahaina, HI – Mar. 15-21, 2026
The last two weeks in Lahaina have been quite interesting. We are experiencing the worst tropical storm they have had here in over forty years. It is still blowing and raining. This morning, after breakfast, we went out looking for a nice spot for a group picture. Much to our surprise the sun came out and we saw a rainbow. By the time the camera was set up, the wind and light rain started again. We all reacted when the camera started to blow over. Our camera person, Travis, said stay put and he fixed the camera for another quick shot. The only sunshine we have had here is on the faces of the volunteers!
Even with the rain, we were able to finish a roof, drywall about 90% of a faulty contractor house, paint, fix punch lists and move furniture in for the one home that we dedicated two weeks ago. Our crew here worked hard during the day and enjoyed each other’s company and talents in the evening.
We had a wonderful week with many highlights. Saturday, after work, the crew pulled up a hymnal on their phones, and we had a great hymn sing. After lights out the lights were out literally as we lost power! The wind was blowing, the rain was coming down hard and the roof was leaking everywhere. As we were bringing out the generators, LTRG called and asked if we were okay and if there was anyway, we could take food to the local shelter in the morning. As the light dawned, we gathered some food and headed to the shelter. They could not accept any of the food that we cooked, just the prepackaged food. We left what we could.
After church, some went out but many of the roads and businesses were closed. We all ended up back at camp for more singing, playing games and cards and even haircuts. All the water did not dampen the spirits of this group. The young men in the group announced they wanted to take the entire group out to dinner on Monday night. They wanted the long-term leadership to have a break since we worked day and night keeping them fed and safe from the storm.
The group donned their best Hawaiian shirts and out we went. After dinner, we did a little shopping, and we topped off with Island Cream.
We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, and a birthday. Later in the week, the LTRG came for dinner followed by another hymn sing led by the young men. As we prepare to say goodbye to this group, they say, “Until we meet again.”
