We had a total of 11 volunteers during the week of October 13–17—8 weekly volunteers and 2 leadership volunteers—working on the Sumey Bridge in Black Mountain. They came from Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, and Montana.

On Monday, volunteers dug footers, installed pipes on one side, and welded plates. On Tuesday, they unloaded rebar and steel beams, installed footer forms and rebar cages, and prepared for the concrete pour. On Wednesday, they poured the footers and built the stem walls. Thursday’s work included setting forms and pouring more concrete.

Friday was spent removing the forms from the stem walls and preparing rebar for the next bridge—the Kaufmann Bridge. Volunteers worked four hours on Friday before attending the Gregory West Bridge dedication at 2:30 p.m. The dedication was featured on WLOS, the local ABC affiliate.
