On June 7, 2026, heavy rainfall (180 millimetres) across western Manitoba caused significant flooding throughout the Swan Valley region, affecting rural areas as well as the towns of Swan River and Minitonas. Rising water overwhelmed drainage systems, flooded roads, and entered homes and businesses, leaving many families facing extensive damage and a long recovery journey. For some homeowners, the flooding came with the added challenge of having little or no insurance coverage for the losses they experienced.

Shortly after the flooding, Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) Canada Operations Manager, Moses Falco and Chair of the Manitoba Unit, Denis Sabourin, travelled to the region to assess the damage and determine how MDS could best respond. During their visit, they met with local authorities, other disaster agencies, community leaders, and homeowners to better understand the scope of the disaster and the needs that remain. Their assessment confirmed that many residents in the Swan Valley continue to face significant challenges as they begin the difficult work of recovery.

Since the June 7 flood, Western Manitoba has experienced continued heavy rainfall with more flooding in the Swan Valley and beyond. MDS continues to monitor the situation and connect with the growing number of homeowners needing assistance.

In response, MDS is mobilizing volunteers to respond, rebuild, and restore hope in the Swan Valley region. Beginning later this summer, volunteers will help repair flood-damaged homes, providing practical support, encouragement, and hope to families as they recover. Through the generosity of donors and volunteers, MDS is committed to walking alongside those impacted by the flooding and helping restore homes, communities, and lives.
