When the call went out in November for MDS volunteers to go to Princeton, B.C., James Toews seized the chance to serve.

Toews, a member of the Mennonite Central Committee B.C. board, knew about MDS but had never done service with the organization before.

For him, the invitation was “a chance to see MDS in action, from the ground up, rather than from arm’s length.”

“Joining the team in Princeton not only met every expectation, but gave me beautiful picture of Jesus’ family in action,” he said.

“Not everyone has the chance to actually pick up a shovel or a hammer and begin the work of bringing hope back. But I was given that gift.”

Driving home from Princeton, a chorus from his youth rang in his heart: “They’ll know we are Christians by our love.”

When he arrived back in Nanaimo, he put together this video.

“Listen to it and you will catch a glimpse of the work MDS and MCC did in flood relief,” he said.
