A swath of devastating and deadly tornadoes walloped communities in the Plains States over the weekend. Authorities report at least four dead in Oklahoma and one in Iowa. At least 40 confirmed tornadoes hammered communities from Texas to Iowa. Hundreds of homes and buildings are destroyed, and thousands of residents are without power. This storm system hit parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.

MDS is currently monitoring conference calls from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Administration) and VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) to determine the extent and locations of the damage. We are also reaching out to local Emergency Management Agencies in several communities to get damage and needs assessments. We continue in conversation with leaders in MDS Region 3 (Plains States) and local units as they gather information on where there might be needs for MDS volunteers.

We encourage you to join us in providing prayer support for the victims of these storms. We also welcome your financial support. MDS only accepts monetary donations. Your donation can be made online – please select 2024 Spring Tornadoes” in the drop-down box. You may also send a check to Mennonite Disaster Service, 583 Airport Road, Lititz, PA 17543 and enter 2024 Spring Tornadoes” as the designation.
