The Gray Fire, which started near Medical Lake, Washington, and the Oregon Road Fire, which started near Elk, Washington, are two significant wildfires that occurred in the area in 2023.
Both fires resulted in significant damage, with the Gray Fire destroying over 259 structures and the Oregon Road Fire destroying 126 homes and 258 outbuildings, and over 20,000 acres of damage.

Location
A post office was established in the community in 1892. Elk is located on the upper reaches of the Little Spokane River in northern Spokane County. The community sits in the valley of the Little Spokane, which flows through Elk at approximately 1,840 feet above sea level.
