What Happened
In September 2024, Hurricane Helene brought heavy rain and strong winds to Creston and the surrounding areas of Ashe County. The storm caused flooding, landslides, and damage to roads and bridges, disrupting transportation and access for residents. Many local bridges and critical infrastructure were damaged or washed out, leaving communities isolated and in need of long-term recovery support. MDS volunteers are focusing on rebuilding and repairing these vital bridges to restore safe access and strengthen the resilience of the area.
