What Happened
In September 2022, the remnants of Typhoon Merbok devastated Chevak, Alaska, serving as the strongest storm in 50 years to hit the region. The storm surge and hurricane-force winds destroyed nearly 90% of the village's subsistence boats, damaged homes, and caused severe coastal erosion. The event severely impacted local food security and infrastructure, bringing vast amounts of debris into the community.
What MDS Is Doing
MDS work will focus on building SIP houses as well as home repair work.
Volunteers will stay in a local hotel.
Location
Chevak is a city in Kusilvak Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2020 census the population was 951, up from 938 in 2010. There is a tri-language system in Chevak; English, Cup’ik, and a mixture of the two languages.
