Crew Leader
The Crew Leader facilitates the day-to-day work of the Weekly Volunteers and works alongside the crew in construction on the job site.
Tasks
Provide leadership for a crew of volunteers and facilitate their work on the job site
Recognize, honor, and utilize expertise of the crew, assigning work accordingly.
Ensure that Weekly Volunteers have the skills to complete construction tasks, teaching and training volunteers new skills as needed.
Balance productivity and providing a positive volunteer experience. Take the time to discover what kind of skills volunteers are eager to learn.
Communicate about and respect volunteer needs (breaks, lunch, restrooms, etc.).
If able, drive Weekly Volunteers to the job site when needed, assuming responsibility for the MDS vehicle.
Work with the Project Director and Construction Supervisor to model and implement on-the-job safety practices, emphasizing safety during weekly orientations and on the job site.
Ensure that safety equipment (hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, masks, etc.) is on site and is used, and communicate with the Project Director when safety equipment is needed.
Ensure the first aid kit (including site address & emergency phone numbers) is always on site, even if the Crew Leader needs to leave. If the Crew Leader must leave the job site, make sure the first aid kit stays on the site, including the site address and emergency phone numbers.
Maintain a clean job site.
Report on-site accidents (even minor), vehicle accidents, and vehicle and equipment problems to the Project Director.
Coordinate with the Project Director/Construction Supervisor as to what work is to be done on the job site and ensure that the work meets MDS standards and complies with required building codes.
Do not agree to do more work than is listed on the MDS Job Card.
Communicate material, tool, and equipment needs to the Project Director/Construction Supervisor, both for the present and for future needs. Plan ahead to avoid last-minute requests
Ensure sufficient tools for the day are on the job site.
Make sure the tools and equipment are clean, in safe working order, and stored in an organized fashion. Work with the Project Director to have tools replaced as needed.
Facilitate and encourage dialogue with the volunteers, homeowners, and community.
Model sensitivity to the cultural and religious diversity of volunteers, homeowners, and the community.
Work through disagreements and conflicts while maintaining relationships.
Submit all invoices and receipts to the Office Manager daily.
Keep track of the number of volunteers on their job site, their hours of work, give a general descriptionof the work, and submit Daily Volunteer Reports to the Office Manager each day.
Ensure that vehicles are checked, fueled, and cleaned at the end of the week.
Work collaboratively with other Leadership Volunteers by contributing to the needs of the project outsideof time spent on the job site.
Assist with other tasks, as requested (e.g. cleaning, running errands, etc.).
