What Happened
Barnsdall was hit by an EF4 tornado on May 6, 2024. The peak wind speeds were 180 mph. The tornado traveled for nearly 41 miles on the ground; killed two people and injured 33. Around 80 homes were destroyed. This was actually the second tornado that hit Barnsdall in 2024. On April 1, a smaller EF1 tornado damaged homes and trees in some of the same neighborhoods that were hit by the May 6 tornado.

Barnsdall is a small community in Osage County, Oklahoma, United States, located about 20 miles northwest of Tulsa. Nestled in the rolling hills of northeastern Oklahoma, Barnsdall is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area while retaining a close-knit, rural character shaped by agriculture, energy production, and deep community ties. The area is known for its prairie landscape, changing seasons, and resilience in the face of severe weather, which has brought neighbors together time and again to support one another.
