Perry, FL – Oct 10-17, 2025 (RV)
With the invaluable input of the local LTRG, nine RV volunteers eagerly headed off to two jobs first thing Monday morning. They came home later that afternoon, tired but exhilarated, having accomplished everything and more than had been planned for the day. By the time they returned to camp Tuesday evening, the mood was a little more subdued, having discovered serious issues hidden behind the walls and under the houses at both job sites. On Wednesday, they once again headed out ready to work, but by this time there was more head scratching and concern about the gravity of the problems revealed. Thursday was met with, “This is our last day of work this week, let’s go and get done what we can!”
In Perry, Robin’s house had been impacted by a tree that fell during the storm. The job card looked straightforward, with drywall repairs on ceilings and walls, new flooring in several rooms, and shoring up the floor in the laundry room. Simple enough. But behind those walls and under those floors, another story was revealed. Subfloor, plumbing, electrical—all a complicated mess.
Buster lives closer to the Gulf, in Steinhatchee, and his house actually moved about two feet in the storm surge caused by Helene. Consequently, the PVC pipes under the house were all snapped off and needed “simply” to be reattached. Additionally, we would be putting in new flooring, a couple of doors, trim, and a countertop in the kitchen. Well, not so simple after all. Maze, anyone?
Deep breaths, lots of conversation, and a weekend to enjoy the area, eat an amazing Sunday breakfast, and attend worship at the Baptist church where we are being hosted all helped give us renewed energy for Week Two.
