Sakanaga, NC – FP – June 22-28, 2025
We had a lively crew of 4 families this week at Summer Family Camp at Sakanaga. They include, Ion & Marie Brubaker and their 6 children age 2 – 13 from ON, Josh and Rosemary Blessing and their children Joelyn and Micah from PA, Dustin & Twila Dawe and their teens Jonathan & Abigail from PA, Rosa Perez and her son Omar also from PA. Our team included crew leaders Jeff & Jean Lee-Mosier from NY, Dan & Judy Rosenberger from IN, our cooks Steve & Kathy Rhodes from VA and Project Director Bob Martin & Sandy. Bringing the total volunteers this week to 26.
Our work around the camp was geared to teach the children skills for projects that were age appropriate. Judy has a gift to teach and interact with the younger children, instructing them on techniques to paint fences, learning to use drills to put rails on the fences, removing screws to take down shutters and scrape old paint from a wall. The older children and their parents replaced fences, dug holes & built picnic tables. While others split and stacked firewood and completed 15 fences around the camp.
Highlights of the week included craft time, creating wooden hedgehogs, collecting nature items for collages, wood burning & rock painting. A bonfire with smores and games of pickleball, basketball and bocce ball offered loads of entertainment as well as card games and puzzles.
