Selma, AL – Nov. 10-16, 2024
This week in Selma, we were joined by 2 small groups of volunteers, 3 from The Meeting Place church in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and 4 from Mennonite churches near Berne, Indiana.
We were blessed to be able to sign off on 2 job cards.
- At Kimesha’s home, volunteers rebuilt the porch at the back of her home which was damaged by the tornado. The new deck and handrail will now allow for safe exit.
- Kristin is very grateful for the new drywall and painting of areas damaged by water. She, along with 5 of the 7 children she cares for, joined us for supper Thursday evening. Her story, written by Don Yoder, is included below.
Work continued at Rosemary’s home with a contingent of 8 volunteers every day. Drywall was hung on walls and ceilings in many rooms, finished and ready for primer and paint towards the end of the week. Windows and doors were installed. Bathrooms were gutted to replace floors & walls and bathtub & shower enclosures installed. Some electrical upgrades were performed.
Terence’s home is advancing well. Crews rebuilt stud walls in 2 small rooms, new wiring and began hanging drywall sheets by Friday.
Once again, Friday night’s meal of grilled ribs and chicken was provided by a local contractor who works for the local long term recovery committee when necessary. The UMCOR representative, Bud, joined us for dinner, shared a bit of his story and spoke words of encouragement to volunteers.
