What Happened

A deadly late-season tornado outbreak, the deadliest on record in December, produced catastrophic damage and numerous fatalities across portions of the Southern United States and Ohio Valley from the evening of December 10 to the early morning of December 11, 2021. A few weeks later western Kentucky was hit by six more tornados causing significant damage to numerous properties. Mayfield, Kentucky, was especially hit hard by these tornados, with at least 58 civilian deaths and countless more people injured. It is estimated that 250 homes and businesses were destroyed and another 370 have major damage.

What MDS Is Doing

Volunteers are focusing on cleanup as well as plans for a long-term response. Cleanup includes clearing debris, removing tree limbs, and repairing homes to make them safe for homeowners or damage assessors to enter.
