What Happened
From December 10-11, 2021, a major tornado outbreak occurred in Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, and Kentucky. This outbreak is the deadliest on record in December, with 89 deaths and at least 55 injuries. Up to 75% of Dawson Springs was destroyed by the ER4 tornado. At least 19 people died as a result
What MDS Is Doing
MDS volunteers will be building new homes.
Location
Dawson Springs is located in southwestern Hopkins County in western Kentucky. The town has a population of about 2,400 people. The climate is generally hot and humid in the summer and cool in the winter. Over 27% of the population is below the poverty line. From the late 1800s to the 1930s, Dawson Springs was well known as a spa and resort town. Today, Dawson Springs is still popular as a tourist destination because of the Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park and nearby lakes and hiking trails.
